Balancing Realism & Fantasy in Your Writing (Podcast)

As a writer, how does one balance between having a level of creative control over their work, which they feel comfortable with and in which they feel their project artistically effective, and the suggestions and input of outside sources?
We, as writers, know how we uniquely want a story of ours to be told, but we definitely need other with no bias and who can see things we may have failed to incorporate, which may improve our words.
