‘Tis a Blessing To Be Bored

To be bored is to be blessed.
Although most would disagree.
For, they see it not as a chance to rest
nor to ponder what could or what could not be.

Most view it as time spent in vain,
not as cherished occasions to reflect
on buried roots of uncured trauma and pain
or why we practice self-neglect.

Most think life should be a constant high
and that every hour spent not attaining it has no meaning,
which is how precious seconds slip by
spent scrolling, swiping, liking, and streaming.

Our Prefrontal Cortex is kicking, screaming,
and passionately demanding to release
stifled ideas and plans that've long been teeming
and for all boredom avoidance to cease.

Excitement isn't always a good thing;
cyclones, disease, and wars are exhilarating, too.
Chronic misery and uncertainty they also bring.
Would such be preferred over boredom, by you?

Boredom is an invite
to sit quietly in a room with thoughts we've long evaded.
What we thought of as inhibiting
is, instead, a chance to be emancipated.

For, during bombings, pandemics, cancer, or recessions,
there's no time to consider, weigh, and think--
no time to absorb any lessons
or that to even blink.

So, next time you're bored, don't reflexively seek some thrill.
It's not some ailment to be remedied.
It's a moment to taunt every force who tried to ever have you killed;
it's a moment to relish the fact they did not succeed.
